4 ways to stay motivated with your workout

During the first few weeks of the year, the gym is always packed with new faces. It’s an exciting time of year for many, filled with a strong sense of motivation to get back on track with fitness. Fast-forward to February and the gym returns to normalcy again. Regardless of the month, it’s not always easy to stay motivated with a new fitness plan. Here are four ways to keep the motivation from running low:

1) Start Small – One of the biggest reasons why motivation can fizzle is training goals are set way too high. There is nothing more discouraging than setting the bar too high, only to fail and ultimately give up out of frustration. To avoid this, start with small attainable goals and build off each one as they are reached.

An example would be to begin with two days of exercise per week and add in an extra day after one month of consistency. Keep adding in an additional day of exercise each month until the desired weekly training goal is reached.

2) Hire a Personal Trainer – Hiring a personal trainer can be a great way to stay motivated. A professional can help set training goals, coach proper movements, teach new exercises and help with accountability. Working with a personal trainer can also be fun and exciting, which can certainly keep the motivation running high.

3) Try a New Activity – There is no quicker way to lose motivation than a boring workout. Try a new exercise class, activity, or mix up the current workout routine. Keep exercise routines fresh to avoid getting bored and losing enthusiasm.

4) Remember the Reason – The single most important way to stay motivated is to remember the reason for exercising. Maybe it’s to lose weight for health reasons, build muscle for functional movements, or to set a healthy example for children. Regardless of the reason, always keep in mind why exercise is important and the purpose for starting.
